How to say no Summary :: essays research papers
Part 1-Saying No: The Basics In the main section of How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty, the creators present the fundamentals of saying no. Be that as it may, why state no? Commonly individuals are convinced into doing things they donââ¬â¢t need to do, basically in light of the fact that they canââ¬â¢t locate the correct words to state no. Another motivation behind why individuals donââ¬â¢t state no is on the grounds that they fear what the individual will consider them in the event that they state no. I can get this, in light of the fact that multiple occasions I have ended up getting things done for individuals since I couldnââ¬â¢t think about a decent reason to get myself out. In the wake of perusing the primary part, I took in the essential methods to courteously saying no. The first is shockingly simpleââ¬just purchase additional time. In the event that you can put off your choice to tolerating a solicitation from somebody, you at that point have the opportunity to truly consider what it wil l take to fulfill the other individual. One of the expressions they recommended was, ââ¬Å"I need to see whether I work firstâ⬠. As an undergrad, my work routine is definitely not steady, with the goal that expression will be extraordinary for me to utilize. Another recommendation was to state you have a ââ¬Å"policyâ⬠against accomplishing something. Itââ¬â¢s great since it tells the individual that it is so critical to do what you have to do. Yet, for me, I donââ¬â¢t figure this would be any acceptable, in light of the fact that my companions wouldnââ¬â¢t purchase the way that I have a ââ¬Å"policyâ⬠. The avoidance procedure appeared as though it would be a decent one. I have a companion who at whatever point I see, he generally needs to go out to a bar and drink. I regularly donââ¬â¢t mind, however in the event that I head toward visit him and Iââ¬â¢m not in the disposition to go out, he will demand that we go at any rate. Counteraction would be acceptable for this situation supposing that I donââ¬â¢t want to go out that night, I ought to likely simply stay away from this companion completely. Misleading somebody all together not to hurt them, or the face-sparing reason is likewise a decent strategy. On the off chance that an ugly young lady were to ask me out, I wouldnââ¬â¢t advise her no in light of the fact that I thought she was ugly. I would most likely reveal to her that I have a ton of work to accomplish for the following couple of months, and I donââ¬â¢t truly have the opportunity to be going out with her.

A few men disdain gentility out of dread of what it involves and may look for tosa botage it (Parent et al 2011, pp354-367). We Really, Really Dont Miss the WASPS
We Really, Really Dont Miss the WASPS On December 5th, the New York Times ran an opinion piece entitled Why We Miss The WASPS. Yes, I understand that it was an opinion piece, which by definition means the author was giving voice to his personal take on an issue. Having read Douthats essay, mostly with my teeth grinding and using the majority of my self control not to terrify the person sitting next to me on a cross-country flight with my muttering and fist clenching, I must, in good conscience, explain that he isnt fully advocating bringing back the old white male cabal of the 60sâ"90s (not fully) though he is most certainly in favor of bringing back their values. As I am sure you will be shocked to read, I am very much not in favor of touching those values with the 50-foot pole I keep in my closet for shoving them as far back into history as I possibly can before they get their cooties on me, my kids, my friends, or my worst enemies because, quite frankly, no one deserves that kind of infestation on their person or in whatever sort of entity they think their soul might be. But Shiri, you might be thinking, it was the era of family dinners and the America that was great and helping those less fortunate. It was not. It was the era in which people died of AIDS by the hundreds of thousands because the higher ups thought the word gay indicated deviance, America was supporting vicious dictators by the score and noblesse oblige wasnt noble. Ah, but you want proof. Thats what books are for. I have a list. Thats what Im for. Roosevelt and Churchill: Their Secret Wartime Correspondence Edited by Francis L. Lowenheim, Harold D. Langley, And Manfred Jonas (Saturday Review Press, 1974) I remember being shocked and horrified by the contents of this book when I read it for background an in-depth project a group of classmates and I were doing on Franklin Roosevelt for AP American History (though I did still love going to the Roosevelt library). In it are unredacted communiques sent between Roosevelt and Churchill, in the heyday of Douthats gilded lily of a political era, in which it is revealed (this is common knowledge now but wasnt during or after than war) that not only did Churchill and our own president know the attack on Hawaii was coming, they knew exactly when and exactly where and they allowed it to happen because it was the only way to convince the American people to join in the war effort. In addition, as far back as, I believe 1939 but definitely by 1940/41, both men knew about the Nazi death camps and made a conscious decision not to do anything about them. Guess noblesse oblige was on sabbatical while millions of people were gassed or shot and burie d in mass graves. Cuban Missile Crisis: 1962 Alabama Security Archive Documents Reader edited by Laurence Chang and Peter Kornbluh (The New Press, 1999) Reader, they declassified them. If you want additional data, the CIAs declassified assessment of the same showdown is here (with some redaction of longer passages). The Short Version, folks: John F. Kennedy was not strong, silent, and stoic leading up to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was talking to Kruschev and to Castro and those conversations are what brought us to be brink of being blasted to radioactive dust. Im not saying the fault was Kennedys alone, but his royal WASPness (yes, I know, he was Catholic; WASP is a state of mind here, folks, not a definitive checking of boxes) certainly didnt help matters. Kennedy didnt want to free Cuba from the tyranny of communism because he wanted to help the Cuban people. He wanted to liberate Cuba because he didnt want to be able to see Russia from his house. So much for Camelot. Iran-Contra: Reagans Scandal And the Unchecked Use of Presidential Power by Malcolm Byrne (University of Kansas Press, 2017) But Shiri, youre thinking, WWII? The Cuban Missile Crisis? Those were ages ago! Okay, fair enough. The Iran Contra Affair, however, I remember, and Im only 40. Guess who was tied up in that garbage fire? Two of Douthats paragons of WASPdom: former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush (who was Vice President at the time). Also embroiled: Robert MacFarlane (National Security Advisor), Caspar Weinberger (Secretary of Defense), members of Hezbolla (Lebanese Shiah Islamic political party; their paramilitary branch is the Jihad Council), Manuel Noriega (Panamanian dictator supported by the United States), Irans leadership, Oliver North (allegedly established the network that funneled funds to the Contras, charges dismissed in 1991), and John Poindexter (Deputy National Security Advisor/National Security Advisor). The quick and dirty is thusly: The U.S. government, and President Reagan in particular, were so terrified that communism might happen on this side of the Atlantic, he ha d his people set up a secret network to allow the sale of weapons to Iran during a period in which Iran was under an arms embargo by Congressional decree. The money from those sales was funneled back through the network and delivered to Noriega to fund his Contras and support his horrific, murderous dictatorship in Nicaragua, lest the people be allowed to choose a government with which old white men did not agree. Regan never went down for this, nor Bush, nor anyone else really North and Poindexter were both convicted, but charges were ultimately dropped a few years later and both have gone on to have successful post-scandal careers, despite evidence of their chicanery. Good evidence. And in case youre wondering about the credentials of this particular books author? Byrne is the Deputy Director and Research Director of the National Security Archive. Somebody to Love: The Life, Death, and Legacy of Freddie Mercury by Matt Richards and Matt Langthorne (Weldon Owen 2016) Freddie Mercury died of AIDS-related complications in 1991; he was 45 years old. At the beginning of the epidemic, most people only survived 18 monthsâ"3 years after diagnosis, but Mercury, due to his unusual financial situation, which provided for early access to new medications, survived for ten. Im a nurse when Im not wearing my Book Riot hoodie, and I remember watching my first patient die of AIDS-related pneumocystis with her five kids in the room in 2006. AIDS is now, for most who contract it, a chronic disease to be managed rather than a death sentence, to the extent many have forgotten it even exists (a dangerous trend but thats a subject for a different post), but during the glorious days of the Reagan and Bush administrations, if one contracted HIV/AIDS, one died. There were many reasons that was the case, as Somebody to Love, a split biography that runs parallel courses tracing both Mercurys story and the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and the UK. Two of most abhorrent, however, were related: stigma and lack of education. Because HIV/AIDS was seen more prevalently in the gay community when it first appeared in the U.S. and UK, and among IV drug users, it was dismissed as a disease of deviants, righteous punishment for behavior that didnt fit the mold set by the evangelical protestants at the top of the pyramid. And because it didnt fit that mold, and because of the atrocious notion that educating people about ways to prote ct themselves would encourage such deviance, at-risk populations were left to fend for themselves, hiding in dark corners (sometimes literally), taking risks because to do otherwise was to risk exposure and lose family, career, or lives. The money that could have gone to HIV/AIDS research and education went elsewhere and people died. Even being as famous as the lead singer of Queen couldnt protect you. Speaking Truth to Power by Dr. Anita Hill (Anchor, 1998) Do you remember who appointed Clarence Thomas to the highest court in the land? I do. It was George H.W. Bush. Bill Clinton my have been a philandering bonehead but at least he gave us Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Bush, though? Clarence. Thomas. Do you think Anita Hill is the only one affected? Of course not. So read her story in her own words. Consider it rippling exponentially and then consider once more how much those old white men care about you, about your mothers and wives and your daughters. Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture by Roxanne Gay (Harper Perennial, 2018) We. Are. Still. Explaining. Ourselves. We. Are. Still. Begging. You. To. Believe. Us. We. Are. Still. Watching. Him. Get. Away. With. It. And you think going back to the days when the Prime Minister of France brought his Mistress to state functions, when one President used to sneak actresses into the White House and another used cigars as sex toys is going to make things better? You think that just because we didnt hear about Reagan or either of the Bushes dallying they didnt do it? Look, if you dont like that bridge in Brooklyn, Pittsburgh has more than Venice and Im sure I can convince the city to cell you a couple of them. I dont mean this as a character assassination, I mean it to make a point: women dont mean anything to most of these men. Theyre the star on the top of the National Christmas tree, shiny and pretty, to be used, displayed, and discarded. And great bearded dude in the sky have mercy if we should dare to attempt protest: even if the husband supports us (and I wil l give Mr. Rodham Clinton that much), some other old, white dude whose name is something like Sernie Banders will interrupt us and shake his finger at us as though were an unruly child rather than a former First Lady, Congresswoman, and Secretary of State when all hes ever done is represent a state of retired hippies with too much money breathing too much methane from too many cow farts. Rape isnt about sex. Its about power. This group Douthat admires so much? Theyre still trying to take ours. We view that a little differently these days. Bummer for them. L.A. SON: My Life, My City, My Food by Roy Choi, With Tien Nguyen and Natasha Phan (An Anthony Bourdain Book, 2013) The menu in D.C. changes whenever a new administration comes to town. Old Ebbitt Grill is always the first to publish its new offerings or, at least, it used to be (I attended George Washington from 1996â"2000 so things may have changed). We knew something new was coming with the Clintons because, while Mr. Clinton fits the WASP criteria to some extent, the menu options become less red meat saturated and included a lot more veggies than they had when Bush the elder was running things. The Clinton and Obama era menus also offered elements from other countries and cultures which hadnt been the case previously. Which is more representative of this whole thing than you might thing. Chef Roy Choi came over from Korea as a child. He grew up in L.A., first in a Koreatown revived by his community (every family in his neighborhood put money in a communal pot. Weekly, someone would get the pot to start a local business and then, once the business was off the ground, increase their weekly contribution to help someone else do the same). When his familys business failed, however, Roy was moved out of Koreatown and to a different part of L.A. where he started exploring other cuisines including Vietnamese, English, Middle Eastern, smoothiesâ¦and while becoming an L.A. son wasnt always easy for Choi, his journey through food, and through the nation, is what made him an American. Because it isnt homogeneity that brought us here. Its all of us, together, learning everything that makes us who we are and learning about one another. So how about if we just dont. How about, if instead of being nostalgic for something that never was, we work toward what could be? What was always meant to be. The actual American dream? Instead of reaching for some false vision of what could have been, we look forward to potential, for something that actually could be? Traditionally, the majority of a studentââ¬â¢s learning occurred within a classroom, with a lecturer present to deliver the course content and actively engage the learning process through a series of interactions and discussions. Winter Wheat became a dependable and profitable harvest de to the high outputs of the new strain of wheat. In 1988, the ââ¬ËSet-a-Side ââ¬Ë Scheme was introduces to cut down cultivable harvest excesss. This gave husbandmans a fee of up to ?200 per hectare if they took at least 20 % of their cultivable land into production. This is due to glaciation taking topographic point around the country. Shropshire ââ¬Ës prevailing dirt type is flaxen dirts such as the underlying ruddy sandstone stone which is found in North Shropshire. This is the most widely distributed dirt type and is chocolate-brown in coloring material and to red in dirt deepness. This type of dirt is formed from weather-beaten stones such as limestone, vitreous silica, granite, and shale. In Shropshire it is chiefly harsh sand. Its harvest suitableness is chiefly for barley, murphies and malting. Coarse sand has a atom size of 0.2-2mm and has a really farinaceous texture. It can be similar to builder ââ¬Ës sand. The single atoms can be seen easy. ( Jefferson, 2010b ) With flaxen dirts the malleability is low and is non cohesive doing low stableness. Due to seedbeds being loose, deep boring can happen doing unneeded works loss. Excessive cultivations under wet conditions can do dirt sums to prostration. You read "UK Soil Types And The Farming System Environmental Sciences Essay" in category "Essay examples" This consequences in a compacted bed when dried out doing harvest growing difficult. The flaxen dirts dry out really easy so a batch of irrigation is needed. The alimentary position of sandy dirts is of course low particularly in potassium hydroxide. Due to the dirt being chiefly acidic it has a low PH. The organic affair of sand dirts is of course low besides of approximately 1-2 % . An illustration of a root disease found is Take-all. This is common in 2nd wheats as the fungus builds up in the roots and dirt. Compaction of harvests which can diminish the growing of root will increase wil increase the degrees of Take-All. This causes high hazard of output loss. ( Jefferson, 2010 ) ââ¬Å" Take-all is arguably the most of import disease of wheat in the UK, partially because it is non easy controlled chemically or by varietal opposition and relies on rotational schemes for control. â⬠( Cereal Disease Encyclopaedia, non dated ) By obtaining a good harvest rotary motion the disease can normally be treated and prevented. Having 50 % of more land in cereals with a twelvemonth interruption on occasion can diminish the jobs and may handle it. ( Jefferson, 2010 ) Oil Seed Rape Oil Seed Rape is a valuable hard currency harvest and has helped to replace sugar Beta vulgaris in Shropshire which two old ages ago was dropped due to the mill shutting. Sociology of Sexual Differences A Critique of The Feminization of Love Essay Example
Sociology of Sexual Differences A Critique of The Feminization of Love Paper We identify love with emotional expression and discussion of felling. The feminization of love by Francesca M. Cancian, focus is on one kind of love: long-term heterosexual love in contemporary United States. Cancians thesis is that there is a feminized and incomplete perspective on love predominates in the United States. There are two guidelines, which Cancian suggests for developing a useful definition of enduring love. The first guideline for a definition of enduring love comes from the prototypes of enduring love the relations between committed lovers, husband and wife, parent and child. Historical provided a second guideline for defining enduring love, specifically between a woman and a man. This historical analysis implies that affection, material help, and routine cooperation all are parts of enduring love. Cancian working definition of enduring love between adults is a relationship wherein a small number of people are affectionate and committed to each other, (define their collective well being as a major goal, and feel obligated to provide core and practical assistance for each other). The second guideline is a narrower feminized definition of love that dominates both contemporary scholarship and public opinion, such as talking about feelings. For Example, Abraham Maslow defines love as a feeling of tenderness and affection with great enjoyment, happiness, satisfaction, elation and even ecstasy. Feminist scholars are dividing on the question of love and gender. Scholars have used Nancy Chodorows theory to develop the idea that love and attachment are fundamental parts of womens personalities but not of mens. A feminized conception of love can be supported by other theories as well, but the strongest support is form the feminized perspective comes from such psychological theories as Chodorows. Their argument, in simple form begins with the observation that in the colonial era the family household was the arena for economic production, affection, and social welfare. As the daily activities of men and women grew further apart, a new worldview emerged that exaggerated the differences between the personal, loving, feminine sphere of the home and the impersonal, powerful, masculine sphere of the workplace. Work became identified with men do for money while love became identified with womens activities at home. Women are only moderately superior to men at love: they have more close relationships and care more about them, and they seem to be more skilled at love, especially when it involves expressing feeling and being venerable. Men tend to have a distinctive style of love that focuses on practical help, shared physical activities, spending time together and sex. Here are some negative consequences of the feminization of love: the feminized perspective leads to political and moral problems; it works against some of the key values and goals of feminists and humanists by contributing to the devaluation and exploitation of women; it states that mens dependency on women remains covert and repressed while womens dependency on men is overt and exaggerated; the feminized perspective on love reinforces this power differential by leading to the belief that women need love more than men; the feminized perspective love is that it legitimates impersonal, exploitive relation in the workplace and the community; feminization of love intensifies the conflicts over intimacy between women and men in close relationship, finally the feminized perspective on love, childcare is a subtle communication of activities, not work. In conclusion the material in this article supports the course thesis that gender is socially constructed. The concept of the sociological imagination supports practically everything in this article. First it talks about history of the past and how things are starting to change. Secondly, the article shows how society plays a role. Finally, the article talks about individuals (men and women) but it does not really explain how they feel. Cancians article is very wordy, boring and it jumps around quite a lot. The article made me think of topics I have never really thought about. The author certainly accomplished what she set out to do.

Phil. #1 ââ¬â Noble lie In order to understand these different arguments of telling a noble lie one must first understand what it is exactly that a noble lie is and how it should be considered when assessing a question like this. The way I understand a noble lie is that it is a lie that is told in order to keep some sort of control over society, along with it a sense of organization over a group of people. Once a noble lie is told in this form we can assume that people would realize their destinies and understand that they have certain duties to perform because they were given certain metals in their bodies. The question of this assessment is why were these lies told? Is it ever ok to tell a noble lie? Over the next couple of pages I will try to explain the different arguments for and against these questions. Plato feels that the people should not even be able to control themselves. He thinks that the people should be controlled by a higher power. Thus, might be the reasoning for telling the people a noble lie, in order to lay a foundation for people to assume their roles in life. 5 Cases of Unnecessary Hyphenation
5 Cases of Unnecessary Hyphenation 5 Cases of Unnecessary Hyphenation 5 Cases of Unnecessary Hyphenation By Mark Nichol In each of the following sentences, one or more hyphens are extraneous. A discussion and revision follows each example. 1. Data is accurate and often delivered in real-time. ââ¬Å"Real timeâ⬠is a compound noun, and such nouns are almost invariably open or closed; hyphenated exceptions such as mind-set are rare. If a compound noun does not appear in the dictionary in closed form (or hyphenated), treat it as an open compound: ââ¬Å"Data is accurate and often delivered in real time.â⬠(However, do hyphenate such a compound that functions as a phrasal adjective before a noun, as in ââ¬Å"This tool provides valuable real-time insight into the process.â⬠Exceptions include standing open compound nouns that are listed in the dictionary, such as ââ¬Å"income taxâ⬠: ââ¬Å"This rule does not apply to income tax returns.â⬠) 2. As companies become increasingly informaà tion-driven, information technology plays a pivotal role in this transformation. When a phrasal adjective follows the noun it modifies, do not hyphenate it: ââ¬Å"As companies become increasingly informaà tion driven, information technology plays a pivotal role in this transformation.â⬠(However, as alluded to in the previous discussion, hyphenate a phrasal adjective when it precedes a noun, as in ââ¬Å"information-driven companies.â⬠) 3. Companies need to get up-to-speed quickly on their regulatory requirements. The words in ââ¬Å"up to speedâ⬠do not collectively modify anything, so hyphens are not required: ââ¬Å"Companies need to get up to speed quickly on their regulatory requirements.â⬠4. Protocols with minimal-to-no tolerance for mistakes should clearly articulate what constitutes a mistake, and how to avoid making it. This sentence includes an unnecessarily hyphenated phrase that is incorrect for the same reason that the one in the previous example is. However, because a noun follows the phrase ââ¬Å"minimal to no,â⬠the phrase may be misidentified as a phrasal adjective. But minimal and no are distinct adjectives that do not combine with to to create a single modifier: ââ¬Å"Protocols with minimal to no tolerance for mistakes should clearly articulate what constitutes a mistake, and how to avoid making it.â⬠5. Many residents were stunned by the apparently racially-inspired crime. Adverbial phrases in which the adverb ends in -ly, not to be confused with phrasal adjectives, are not hyphenated: ââ¬Å"Many residents were stunned by the apparently racially inspired crime.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Crockett & Tubbs Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Crockett & Tubbs - Assignment Example There are legal frameworks that guide the formation and fulfillment of business contracts. There are ethical practices that form the business culture of any business establishment. A contract formation consists of several stages. In the case of Crockett and Tubbs, the contract was at the negotiation stage. If an agreement had been reached and the business contract signed by both parties, then such a contract is not to be contravened, since it is legally binding. In law, under the rule of contract, when a business matter, transaction or contract is completed, it is final. Failure for Crockett to sale the Ferrari Daytona at $250,000 would lead to a court case. Otherwise, if a contract had not been signed, Tubbs negotiators can be influenced by the increase in demand for the Ferrari Daytona and change the terms of negation so as to make more profits. For this case, Crockett had not signed a business contract with Tubbs and therefore, the law leaves the decision upon Tubbs to either change the terms and conditions. The aim of a business is to generate profits. To achieve this, the business must establish a nourishing relationship with its partners in business. Crockett should be guided by ethical principles of business conduct. A legitimate business will make the customer come for more and therefore, to reinforce the relationship and also ensure sustainable business, Crockett ought to sell the Ferrari Daytona to Tubbs at $250,000. Some business individuals advance the argument that there is a mutual relationship between ethics and business. They presume that ethics naturally comes to those businesses that are profit-oriented. This argument has both weak and strong versions. For the present case of Crockett and Tubbs, a profit-oriented approach may seem to provide a short term success (Fieser, 1996). Businesses which are thriving are those that have embraced ethical practices

Plato, John Dewey, Maria Montessori Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Plato, John Dewey, Maria Montessori - Essay Example To the prisoners the shadows and objects are his reality. (Cottingham, 1996, p. 67-69 512-513) In case the prisoner is allowed to turn around or even stand the sunlight coming into the cave from the entry will be too much for him. And if they are objects passing by their shadow to the prisoner are the reality rather than the object itself. He will see the sun as the source of the shadows that he has seen. Once this prisoner is taken outside and gets enlightened and has he desires to free other prisoners in the cave but they are not willing to set free. When the prisoner is back in the cave he is trying to adjust to the dim light and has to get used again. His identification of the objects on the wall goes down this makes the other prisoners to think that going to the surface has destroyed his eyesight. In the allegory the outside of the cave or the world represent amass knowledge and the cave is a representation of a dark place with limited information leading to a faulty reality. (Cottingham, 1996, p.67-69 512-513) According to Plato to get reality one had to look at the order of the creation to increase understanding of experience. 'Humans had to travel from the visible realm of image-making and objects of sense, to the intelligible, or invisible, realm of reasoning and understanding. "The Allegory of the Cave" symbolizes this trek and how it would look to those still in a lower realm. Plato is saying that humans are all prisoners and that the tangible world is our Cave. The things which we perceive as real are actually just shadows on a wall. Just as the escaped prisoner ascends into the light of the sun, we amass knowledge and ascend into the light of true reality: where ideas in our minds can help us understand the form of 'The Good'. (Cottingham, 1996, p. 67-69 512-513) In Plato theory, what we perceive through our senses is not a reality i.e. what the prisoners see as the reality on the wall are just shadows, but on the contrary when one gains knowledge then he/she is able to understand the true reality. (Cottingham, 1996, p. 67-69 512-513) Unlike Plato in the Allegory of the cave the Pragmatisms connote that action and knowledge are two different spheres and also there is a supreme truth exceeding the sort of inquisition (ways by which the organisms can get a hold of their surrounding) that organisms use to get by in life. (Shusterman, 1997, p.11, 23, 90-95) This theory provides an environmental account of knowledge. 'Real' and 'true' are used in the inquiry process and they cannot be comprehended outside of that context. The theory acknowledges an outside world which needs to be tackled or dealt with. John Dewey says 'something is "made true" when it is verified.' According to Pragmatists; 'truth is not ready -made, but jointly we and reality "make" truth.' Truth is characterized by being mutable and it relative to abstract system. (Shusterman, 1997, p.11, 23, 90-95) In the Allegory of the cave approach they are no visible importance of teaching since the students observe and learn from what they see. A teacher or a mentor is not assigned any role since in Plato view of man is as a universal being that does not learn but discover. All human beings have the ability to move being ignorant to being knowledgeable as Plato asserts. (Shusterman, 199

Children With Behavioral Disorders in Single Parent Homes Essays
Unfortunately, we live in a world were economic times are tough. It can be a struggle for parents to adequately support children - especially if there is only one parent. According to Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development about 15.9 percent of children world wide live in single-parent households. In the United states alone there are approximately 13.7 million single parents today, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.8 million children (approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U.S. today). The question we must ask is, What struggles and psychological effect does separation and divorce have on the parents as well as the children? Divorce is the final termination of a marital union, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between the parties. In most countries divorce requires the sanction of a court or other authority in a legal process. The legal process for divorce may also involve issues of spousal support, child custody, child support, distribution of property and division of debt. Shared custody is awarded in approximately twenty percent of all divorce child custody cases. When shared custody is not awarded, the court will award one parent sole custody of the child. A court may also award a parent joint custody. Joint custody is a court order whereby custody of a child is awarded to both parties. In joint custody both parents are "custodial parents" and neither parent is a non-custodial parent; or, in other words, the child has two custodial parents. Seventy percent of all child custody cases name the mother as the custodial parent. Two Reports On Serious Failings
The first report I found from http://www. bbc. co. uk/news/uk-england-bristol-20084254 was for Winterbourne View care home for people with disabilities the report says eleven care workers male and female were involved. One victim was showered fully clothed and had mouth wash poured into her eyes , while another was asked if they wanted their face grated with a cheese grater , the abuse got so much for one patient that he tried jumping out of his window from the second floor to then be mocked by the care workers, this all came to light by BBC One Panorama doing undercover recordings it was told to CQC that ignored the complaint. After the recordings were shown on BBC one the eleven care workers admitted to 38 different charges of abuse and neglect, six were jailed between six months to two years while the other five were on suspended sentences, the CQC said it was misjudgement that the concerns had not been investigated. The second report I found from http://www. bbc. co.Ã uk/news/uk- england-lancashire-24838898 was for Hillcroft Nursing home for people with advanced dementia the report says three female care workers were in involved in the abuse towards eight residents, the abuse involved was physical abuse because they were slapped, tipped out of chairs and had things thrown at them and allegedly stamping on the feet of one resident and then emotional abuse because the care workers were mocking them after the physical abuse, they were found out because the cleaner witnessed the abuse and made the allegations which resulted in the staff being suspended. But the returned to work after being given warnings with an internal investigation and not referred for police investigation, shortly after this the CQC kept getting anonymous emails about the standard of care and they handed it over to the local authority safeguarding team who later called in the police. Both of these reports involve very serious cases of abuse and only found out when undercover recoding or a wit ness came forward this is something management should have picked up on, all managers have a duty to hire safe and caring workers and to send all care workers on mandatory training sessions that cover all topics and all policies and procedures are being set within the company. Winterboure View and Hillcroft Nursing home management have failed to do this and were unable to provide a safe environment for vulnerable adults.

Public Sector Agencies are Best Equiped to Fight Social...
Public Sector Agencies are Best Equiped to Fight Social Injustice With a new President, in came the rush of a new agenda. Gone were the days of the Clinton era, a time of continued investment in big government programs and a commitment that the federal government would assist in healing societal wounds. With President Bush in office, the social work community knew it was in for big changes. Armed with an agenda consistent with his conservative beliefs, President Bush came forth with policies that attempted to downsize the federal role in social issues and social work, to return power to the states in the form of block grants, and to increase reliance on the market as a solution to problems. Like his father before him, Bush wanted aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦After adopting the Elizabethan Poor Laws from England, the United States seemed to be on its way to a private social welfare system. The Elizabethan Poor Laws created the distinction between ââ¬Å"worthyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"unworthyâ⬠poor and sent those ââ¬Å"unworthyâ⬠of help to privately owned and operated workhouses (or poorhouses). The community and the family took primary responsibility for any needs a person might have had. Throughout much of the 1700s and 1800s, the government did nothing to regulate or deliver social services. A voluntary attitude toward societal problems soon developed (Zastr ow, 1999). The official development of the profession of social work is recognized by scholars to be connected to the Charity Organization Society (COS) and the Settlement House Movements. Both started in the late 1800s. Jane Addams founded the first settlement-house in 1889, and the Charity Organization Society started in Britain in the 1850s. These two separate and different movements are credited with developing the organization and delivery of social work (Karger Stoesz, 2001). The Charity Organization Society, led in the United States by Mary Richmond, finds parallels in both private sector social work and in the Conservative theory of today. The COS, for example, attributed poverty to the moral failings of the poor, ignoring social and economic forces that shaped individual behavior. Believers in private (voluntary)

Are Asher Levs Paintings Disrespectful to his Parents Essay Example For Students
Are Asher Levs Paintings Disrespectful to his Parents? Essay Asher Lev paints against the values of his family and community. He disregards Jewish traditions and observance by pursuing his passion for art. His individuality has him disobeying the Rebbe, the mashphia, his mythic ancestor as well as his parents. Asher does not intend for his artwork to be harmful, but that they convey truths and feelings. Yet, the Brooklyn Crucifixions cause shame for his observant Jewish parents. In that way, he disrespects their teachings and wishes. He challenges the Jewish belief on modesty in creating nude works and disturbs the Hasidic community in his Christian imagery. Worst of all is the reflection of the life-like representation of his family in the paintings. This causes a shocked and angry reaction from the public. The climax evolves towards the last chapter of My Name is Asher Lev, when Ashers parents react hurtingly after the paintings are exposed to them in the New York Museum. Chaim Potok writes their reaction as happening slowly in a step-by-step movement; in silences; building up readers expectations of a negative outcome. Guilt and fear of disobedience induces a silence from Asher. Theyre not the truth, Papa; but theyre not lies either. Asher appears to be speaking in his mind while thinking of the memories that the pictures portray. He disregards his fathers lesson on how one Jew can cause the rest of the Jews to suffer. Asher feels his disrespect as a son and justifies himself in his mind, but does not speak to his parents about the Cruxifixion paintings at all. Disrespect for his parents makes Asher scared. He anticipates their disappointment and hurt. Readers sympathize in acknowledging his inner suffering as he struggles to communicate freely with them. Asher fears his fathers reaction more than his mothers reaction for it is his father that disapproves of Asher drawing in the first place. The father appears to be the one who should be feared the most. Other characters suggest this, for example, Ashers teacher who says,What will your father say if he saw this? in regards to the picture of the Rebbe Asher drew in his Chumash. His mother is more supportive of Asher and just wants him and his father to get along. After finishing their journey for the Rebbe, she says I want you and your father to be friends, The tension between Asher and his father is evident throughout the story. When his parents finish travelling for the Rebbe and return to the apartment, their relationship is more distant. When his father sees the paintings in the New York museum, he is in such extreme shock and anger that he says nothing to Asher but gives him a look. His face wore an expression of awe and rage and bewilderment and sadness all at the same time. Ashers father feels ultimately disgraced by Asher. He does not want to believe that it is his son for no son of Aryeh Lev could be that disrespectful. Asher deeply cares for his mother and does not want to upset her, but he disobeys her anyway. At four years old he is encouraged by her to draw pretty things, which is in contrast to Jacob Kahns advice to draw with passion. Ashers mother already suspects that there would be something in the Museum that Asher would be afraid to reveal to them. Asher looks at his mother and takes her by the hand to comfort her before the damage will be done. Her hand was cold and moist suggest that it is too late to stop the suffering and shame soon to be endured. When Ashers mother sees the Cruxifixion paintings, like the father, she is too upset that she barely ounces a word to Asher. The silences from Ashers parents are because of suffering and shame that is inflicted from his disrespect towards them. Ashers paintings not only profoundly effect his parents, but they are also viewed upon negatively by the community. .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 , .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .postImageUrl , .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 , .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:hover , .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:visited , .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:active { border:0!important; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:active , .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2 .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud3bdcf3e5f3a1f4f98db90eae36becb2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Masaccio Innovator Of Perspective And Illusion EssayThe communitys reactions compile of many instances of silences and whispers in the Museum. It is as though they are singling out Asher from his parents. The community of Jews, as well as goyims, is acknowledging Ashers rebellion and individuality. Those who mostly dislike or find the paintings atrocious would be the orthodox Jews, such as Ashers parents. Hushed whispers is converted into silences when Asher parents are noticed looking at the paintings. It is obvious that Asher has violated the standard of Jewish religion by depicting his parents in a Christian-based painting. The community is shocked by this and can see the Jewish shame. Readers note the feeling of eyes, stares and silences repeating motifs. The public stares and points out that, Thats them. In the elevator, a man also stares at Asher and his parents. Eyes often tell a story; it is able to reveal happiness, sadness, excitement or boredom. In the museum, the eyes and stares reflect Ashers shame upon his parents. Several patriarchal figures in Ashers early childhood give him advice about painting against Jewish tradition. Because Asher does not follow their teachings, it leads him to compose the Cruxifixion paintings and hence disrespect for Jewish concepts. It is not Ashers purpose in his are to rebel and defy his religion, but to express his feelings. Yet Yudel Krisky calls him a scandal for turning away from studying the Torah and his father repeatedly implies that it is foolish for Asher to draw. Still, it does not stop Asher from becoming an artist. In chapter 5,Asher pleads with his father to not call it foolishness and his mother says, You are being disrespectful to your father. The Rebbe even warns Asher after giving his blessings for Ashers bar mitzvah that he must honour his father. In painting against his fathers wishes, it is a breaking of one of the Ten Commandments. Asher is told that knowledge and studying is more important, like the duty of his fathers travels for the Rebbe and his mother finishing off Uncle Yaakovs work. But he follows them and instead of studying the Torah like common Hasidic boys, he travels to New York and then Paris because his paintings have caused stir amongst the community. Asher shivers in the wind, after his father and mother leaves the New York Museum. It is that feeling of coldness and illness again, like the trend in Ashers family. His mother suffers from grief of her dead brother in Chapter 1; his father suffers from a fever in Chapter 2 and Asher appears to be pale and unwell in returning from Paris in Chapter 14. The suffering of coldness is a reminder of Siberia and the persecuted Jews. Ashers father says,Any man who has caused a single Jew to perish, the Torah considers it as if he had caused a whole world to perish. Asher is told several times that if a Jew is hurt, the rest is hurt with him. Asher is an example. His paintings have disgraced his family and the whole community is aware. The contradicting images of the Cruxifixion triggered by Ashers internal conflict have subsequently ruined his family. This can be regarded as an ultimate disrespect towards his family. Besides disobedience, Ashers problem is rebellion. This rebellion is not purposely imposed to shame his family, but it is his internal conflict that causes him to release his feelings into his paintings. The pictures of the naked women and the Cruxifixion displayed at the museum are ways in which he tells the whole world of his torment and helplessness. This is revealed as rebellion. Asher pours his heart in his paintings and so when the world around him is suffering, he draws these memories. It is similar to the memory of his mothers suffering, where he uses ash to contour his mothers face of pain and the bitterness of being ridiculed where he draws an ugly sickening picture of the boy at school. .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 , .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .postImageUrl , .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 , .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:hover , .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:visited , .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:active { border:0!important; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:active , .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44 .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uab1eafc47603f959fb856149d0c1da44:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Albrecht Durer Biography EssayAsher and his art is an ultimate form of disrespect towards his parents and perhaps the Jewish community. They warn him of the day of hurt and resent like the opening day of Ashers paintings in the New York Museum. Ashers father returns from Russia, and says Do not forget your people Asher It is the same as if one Jew aches, the whole community hurts, Ashers mythic ancestor haunts him in his dream, and indicates that his art is a waste of time at the end of Chapter 4. It is Ashers gift that separates him from the Jewish community. He causes so much pain for his parents and the community that the only resolution is too send Asher away, which the Rebbe does at the end. Like the father and the mother, Asher is journeying for him to prevent Jews from suffering. The conclusion ends with Ashers parents watching in silence as Ashers cab pulls away. Similarly, at the museum, he had watched his parents, who did not utter a voice or a glance at him, pull away in a cab. In his parents eyes, Asher has crossed the boundary of obedience and disrespect, with such immense rage and hurt that it causes a deadly silence between them.
